Gov’t distributing ‘billions’ to poor Filipinos, Duterte defends coronavirus response

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte once again defended his administration’s Covid-19 pandemic response.

In a taped address Thursday evening, Duterte said the government has been distributing “billions” to the poor most affected by the health crisis.

“We are sacrificing time, effort, lahat because we have to inform the people of what is going on,” according to the Chief Executive.

“Namimigay kami ng ayuda sa mga mahihirap. Yun lang talaga ang mahihirap. Tapos saibihin na walang ginawa ang gobyerno. Nauna pa kami and we are giving money. Yun lang ang most expeditious way of doing it para madalian,” he added.

The government’s pandemic response has been repeatedly criticized for being slow and ineffective.

As of May 17, the Philippines recorded a total of 54,235 active Covid-19 cases, with 1,076,428 recoveries and 19,262 casualties.
