A scion of the Duterte or Marcos families could become the next Philippine president in 2022 if survey trends and the feudalistic selection of leaders continue, BizNews Asia magazine publisher Tony Lopez said Friday (May 7).
In his Manila Standard column, Lopez said Philippine presidents only came from five families over the past 60 years: the Macapagal and Macapagal-Arroyo held the post for a combined 13 years; Ferdinand Marcos and Fidel Ramos, who are cousins, ruled for a total of 26 years; the late Corazon Aquino and her son, Benigno Aquino III became president for a total of 12 years and four months; while Joseph Estrada was President for months and President Rodrigo Duterte, six years.
Citing results of Pulse Asia’s latest voter preference survey for potential presidential candidates, Lopez said: “Per surveys, the next leader of this nation of 110 million will come from one of the five families mentioned above—a Duterte or a Marcos.”
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, the President’s daughter, had a rating of 27 percent while Marcos got 13 percent.
“If there were 50 million voters, Sara Duterte’s 27 percent translates into 13.5 million votes (her dad garnered 16 million or 39 percent in 2016). Bongbong Marcos’s 13 percent would be equivalent to 6.5 million votes –seven million votes behind Sara’s,” Lopez said.
For the BizNews Asia publisher, the five families’ control over Philippine politics show the country is far from being a democracy.
“It is a rule by feudalism where the so-called noble political class, or economic class, rules over the teeming millions who are slaves or vassals. Thanks to their miseducation, the slaves do not at all complain,” he said.
