Para magaan sa bulsa: Mikee Romero proposes 12-month hospital bill payment plan for COVID-19 patients

By Billy Begas

Deputy Speaker and 1-PACMAN Rep. Michael Romero has filed a measure seeking flexible hospital bill payment of up to 12-months for COVID-19 patients.

Romero said on April 15, 2020 the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) issued case packages for COVID-19. It will cover P43,997 for mild pneumonia cases, P143,267 for moderate pneumonia cases, P333,519 for severe pneumonia cases and P786,384 for critical pneumonia cases.

Other government agencies including local government units provided their own COVID-19 subsidies based on their respective financial capabilities.

Various reports show that the medical expenses can easily go up to P1 million “thereby placing financial hardships to COVID-19 positive Filipinos and their families who has already been struck by the deadly pandemic.”

Under House Bill 9310, the President will be given the authority to direct public and private healthcare service provider to implement a minimum of 12 months a amortization plan for the medical and hospital charges incurred by COVID-19 patients not covered by PhilHealth and other government subsidies.

Healthcare service providers that will violate the measure will be fined P200,000 and suspended for three months.

Individuals violating the measure can be imprisoned from six month to six years.
