The Philippines will soon receive funding from the United Nations (UN) to help the government protect human rights including against abuses committed during police operations, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Tuesday (June 1).
“Funding will be provided by the UN over a three-year period, subject to Philippine compliance with certain measurable outputs,” he said.
Guevarra said this was made possible after “the Philippine government, led by the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) and the DOJ (Department of Justice), has completed its negotiations with the UN regarding the joint program on technical cooperation on human rights.”
“This joint program arose from the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council pertaining to the Philippines last year,” he explained.
Guevarra said that both concerned government agencies and the diplomatic community will be informed about this development.
“The project document will be circulated to other concerned government agencies for their respective endorsements,” he noted.
“We are scheduling a briefing for the diplomatic community on this matter,” he added.
