Palace Spokesman Harry Roque said he had no idea why President Rodrigo Duterte did not go to the burial of his predecessor, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
In a televised briefing Monday, Roque assumed that Duterte wanted to avoid large crowds amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Hindi ko alam kung bakit. It could be because it’s pandemic and we’re trying to limit the number and the presence of the president would encourage crowds.” the secretary said.
While Duterte failed to attend Aquino’s wake or burial last week, Roque said the President had a “personal conversation” with the Aquino family to express his heartfelt sympathies.
“There were offers for the family to have all the honors that the Republic can give to a former president. But, the Palace had to bow to the wishes of the family for a more subdued ceremony,” he added.
