Not a fluke.
That was the reaction of Senator Sonny Angara, chairman ng Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, after Gilas Pilipinas defeated South Korea on Sunday during the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in Clark, Pampanga with a final score of 82-77.
The chair of the Senate finance panel recalled how South Korean coach Cho Sang Hyun described as a “lucky shot” the bank shot of Gilas player SJ Belangel that resulted in the Filipinos’ earlier victory against the Koreans last Wednesday at the Angeles University Foundation.
Angara said Gilas Pilipinas showed its extraordinary grit after three straight wins in Group A of the qualifying round.
He said Gilas’s skills would help lift the country’s image as a basketball-playing country.
Angara also praised Gilas coach Tab Baldwin for leading the team toward its 3-0 sweep.
