Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo encouraged the remaining members of the New People’s Army (NPA) to give up their arms and join the mainstream society.

During his commentary show “Counterpoint,” Panelo said the military considers the NPA as a grave internal security threat to the country.

“Kinu-konsidera po ng military na ang communist insurgency, talagang ito ay mataas ang panganib internally sa national security kaya masigasig din silang lipulin ang mga ito,” according to him.

The Palace official said the communist rebels, who are accused of conducting extortion activities and attacks, will be held accountable for their atrocities.

“Iyan daw mga NPA, accountable sila, kailangan sagutin nila lahat ng krimeng ginagawa nila. Ngayon, sumuko na kayo para matapos na ang problema niyo,” he added.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier sent a P9-million cash reward to the Eastern Mindanao Command and the Western Mindanao Command for neutralizing several high-ranking leaders of the NPA.

The Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, the European Union, and the Philippines.
