‘Di kailangang magtipid! Philhealth increases dialysis sessions from 90 to 144

House Special Committee on Senior Citizens chairperson Rodolfo Ordanes commended the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., (PhilHealth) for increasing the hemodialysis coverage for its beneficiaries from 90 sessions to 144 sessions.

“We consider this a sign PhilHealth, at the policy level, is gradually changing for the better,” said Ordanes. “Bakit nga naman kasi 90 days lang ang sasagutin ng Philhealth gayong 144 days ang kumpletong dialysis treatment? Kung isasalba natin ang buhay ng dialysis patients, isagad na natin hanggang sa paggaling.”

Patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 (CKD 5) need hemodialysis. CKD 5 is the seventh leading cause of death among Filipinos.

According to the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI), one Filipino develops chronic renal failure every hour or about 120 Filipinos per 1 million population every year.

Based on estimates, 2.3 million Filipinos have CKD. In 2016, more than 36,000 patients were on dialysis treatment which reflects a 15% increase in the number of patients in just one year.

Ordanes expressed hope that PhilHealth will further improve the services it is rendering to its beneficiaries.
