Gov’t nets P41B in taxes from Pilipinas Shell

The government is expected to collect P41 billion worth of excise tax from Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., Malacañang said Thursday.

In a virtual presser, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said this fund will be used to help with efforts to stop the spread of Covid-19.

“Meron tayong inaasahang makokolekta na hanggang P41 bilyon. Ito po ay dahil nanalo ang ating gobyerno dito sa kaso na nakabinbin sa Korte Suprema. Ito po yung Commissioner of Internal Revenue at ang Bureau of Customs laban po sa Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation,” according to Roque.

“2012 pa po eh kinokolektahan na natin ng excise tax ang Shell dahil sila ay nagpapasok ng alkylate. Ang sabi ng Shell hindi po daw dapat sila patawan ng excise tax dahil hindi daw po ito unleaded gasoline.

“Pero ang paninindigan ng gobyerno, ang alkylate ay iba lang pangalan ng unleaded gasoline. Nagkaroon po ito ng TRO ‘to sa korte 2014 pa. Sa wakas, matapos ang halos 20 taon, eh na-lift naman po ang TRO,” he added.
