Senator Risa Hontiveros on Monday said the government should ensure that all benefits due the families of the soldiers who died in a plane crash on Sunday should be released without delay.
The victims should also be accorded the proper military honors upon burial, she said after a Philippine Air Force C-130 plane carrying more than 90 passengers crashed in Sulu, leaving at least 45 dead.
“I extend my sincerest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims of the C130H plane crash in Sulu. Our hearts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” Hontiveros said.
“Kasama ko ang sambayanang Pilipino sa pagsaludo sa kanilang alaala. Their sacrifice and bravery to secure our freedom will never be forgotten,” she added.
“It is my hope that a closer investigation of this matter will ensure the protection of our brave men and women in uniform in their future deployments. Considering this is the second plane crash in two weeks, is a disservice to our armed services if we leave them vulnerable in battle,” Hontiveros said.
“Grief this expansive calls for clarity and commitment. Let us do better in protecting the very people who protect our country,” she said.
At least 45 people were killed after the plane crash on Sunday , the military reported.
According to the military, the incident happened at 11:30 a.m. in Barangay Bangkal in Patikul, Sulu.
The aircraft was carrying three pilots, five crew members, and soldiers traveling to Jolo, Sulu from Cagayan de Oro.
Based on initial information, the plane overshot the runway as it tried to land at the Jolo airport and crashed in the nearby town of Patikul.
