A change of heart? Vaccine refusers can’t be arrested, says Duterte

By Prince Golez

People who refuse to get vaccinated against Covid-19 can’t be arrested, President Rodrigo Duterte said.

Duterte’s statement contradicted his statement in June that he would send those who refuse Covid-19 vaccinations to jail.

“Kayong mga ayaw magpabakuna, okay lang sa akin. Ganito ‘yan eh, ideally talagang… what would we say, pilitin ng gobyerno, but this is a democracy,” the Chief Executive said during his weekly televised address Monday.

“We cannot arrest you if you go out or I cannot enforce totally a rule na huwag kayong… unless, of course, ‘yung sa mga barangay. Pero demokrasya ‘to and it’s different in other countries. In other countries, Saudi Arabia, ‘pag sinabing sara, sara lahat. But Saudi Arabia is not the kind of setup that we have,” he added.

But, Duterte insisted that vaccines provide protection against the viral disease.

“Ang ating depensa lang talaga is iwas, balay / bahay, tapos wash your hands, do not go out when it is not necessary. Bakuna, kung mayroong bakuna, as long as there is a supply nearby, magpabakuna na kaagad kayo para sigurado.
