Duterte calls Covid-19 frontliners ‘new breed of heroes’ on Nat’l Heroes’ Day

By Prince Golez

As the Philippines celebrates National Heroes’ Day, President Rodrigo Duterte lauded the country’s health workers, uniformer personnel, government employees, and other workers in essential industry sectors as “new breed of heroes.”

“This National Heroes’ Day, we pay tribute to a new breed of heroes who readily answered the call to fight in a war against one of the greatest threats to our way of life,” Duterte said in a message Monday.

“These past two years, we have witnessed the indomitable spirit of these nameless health workers, uniformed personnel, government employees, and frontliners in essential industries who – hiding in anonymity – bravely led our battle against the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

The President said these people who “selflessly” put their lives on the line for others have earned their rightful place among the nation’s illustrious.

“Their names will not be etched on the edifice, statues will not be erected in their honor, banknotes will not be graced by their portraits, and their individual exploits will not be immortalized on the pages of historic books. Yet, for selflessly risking their lives to ensure the survival of our society, I can confidently say that they have more than earned their rightful place in the pedestal of heroes,” according to him.

In a recorded speech during the National Heroes’ Day celebration held in Taguig City, Duterte also recognized the “noble sacrifices” of the country’s forefathers that paved the way for the freedoms that Filipinos now enjoy.

“May we all learn from the valiant example of the past and present heroes and build on them to achieve a stronger future for all,” he also said.
