Malacañang confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte has given the green light for the resumption of casino operations in Boracay Island.
“The President has given his go-signal allowing the operation of a casino in Boracay. Prior to this directive, casino establishments have not been operating on the island,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement Saturday.
Roque said Duterte’s decision is part of the government’s “revenue generating efforts” to cushion the economic impact of Covid-19.
Casino operations may operate in Boracay, provided that measures to protect against Covid-19 should be undertaken, he added.
“Casino operation in Boracay shall follow restrictions such as the observance of safety and health protocols imposed in view of the current Covid-19 pandemic and ensuring safeguards to keep children or minors away from gambling activities,” according to him.
In his second “Talk to the People” address Thursday, Duterte encouraged the operation of casinos in the island resort to raise more money to combat the pandemic.
