Lacson dreads a country without state auditors: ‘Kanya-kanyang kurakot’

The nation needs COA.

Senator Panfilo Lacson is a strong believer of the Commission on Audit (COA) to guard against corruption in government.

Lacson is concerned that corruption will only become rampant if there are no auditors checking the financial transactions in government agencies.

The former police chief made the comment after COA red-flagged several state agencies over questionable use of government funds on health care, education, transportation, among others.

“Imagine a country without state auditors… kanya kanyang kupit, kanya kanyang kurakot,” Lacson tweeted on August 19, 2021.

President Duterte has come to the defense of the Department of Health after its use of COVID-19 funds were questioned by the audit commission. He said it was impossible to steal these public funds.

Duterte also directed Cabinet members not to follow COA and instead continue with their jobs. He told COA to stop flagging and publishing preliminary inquiry reports to avoid any condemning prematurely.

Lacson said Duterte was out of line when he publicly rebuked COA. He said the auditors were just performing their mandate and responsibility to the people and the Constitution.
