No rush: PH to wait for ex-US diplomat’s arrest or extradition to pursue sex raps

Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento admitted on Friday (Aug. 13) court proceedings against former United States diplomat Dean Cheves might have to be put on hold.

“Not yet,” said Malcontento when asked about if court proceedings will continue even though Cheves is still in the US.

“Until he is arrested or extradited,” he added.

Cheves, who has been stationed at the US Embassy in Manila until early this year, has been indicted by a federal jury for engaging in illicit conduct in a foreign place and possession of pornographic materials.

Aside from this, government prosecutors has filed before the Pasay City regional trial court (RTC) a case against the American for violating the Child Abuse Law and Child Pornography.

Because of this, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra previously revealed that the Philippine government is looking into getting Cheves extradited.
