Seven persons have landed in the shortlist of candidates vying for a vacant seat at the Supreme Court (SC).

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has already submitted the shortlist to President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday (Aug. 27).

Those in the list are Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez; Deputy Court Administrator Raul Villanueva; Sandiganbayan Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang and Geraldine Faith Econg; and Court of Appeals Justices, Japar Dimaampao, Ramon Cruz, and Maria Filomena Singh.

A seat became vacant at the SC following the early retirement of Justice Edgardo Delos Santos last June 12 instead of his compulsory retirement on June 12 next year.

He was appointed as SC magistrate by President Rodrigo Duterte in December 2019.

Prior to this, he served as justice of the Court of Appeals (CA) from 2008 up to 2019.

He also served as a trial court judge from 1983 up to his appointment to the CA.
