Roque throws temper tantrum at doctors unappreciative of gov’t pandemic response; Leachon seeks apology for ‘verbal abuse’

Epic meltdown for poll publicity?

A Malacañang official eyeing a senatorial run in next year’s elections blew his top and raged against a group of doctors critical of the government’s COVID-19 response.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque reportedly angrily scolded physician leaders for supposedly not appreciating the government’s efforts to address the pandemic. Roque has been identified in a Philippine Daily Inquirer report as the Cabinet official who berated the medical professionals during a recent meeting of the state task force struggling to contain the outbreak.

It was health reform advocate Dr. Tony Leachon who earlier spilled the beans about the “rude behavior” of the Cabinet member towards the doctors during the IATF meeting. Leachon has demanded an apology from the official after unleashing a “verbal abuse” against the physician leaders.

“Heard about a Cabinet Secretary assaulting physician leaders during the last IATF meeting. We deserve an apology for this rude behavior!” Leachon tweeted on Sept. 9, 2021. “I’m not at liberty to reveal it. But I’m bothered by the behavior of this cabinet Secretary and the public should know so the IATF should call out the behavior of their colleague or else they will be suspects too. They are public servants. We deserve the best,” he added.

Roque, the loquacious President Duterte’s mouthpiece, was reportedly screaming at the top of his lungs while lambasting the physician leaders for never saying “anything good about the government response” based on the PDI report.

Roque reportedly issued the rebuke after the doctors opposed the easing of movement controls in Metro Manila and pressed for strict lockdown to stem the surging COVID-19 cases. PDI reporter Marlon Ramos posted online a short video clip of Roque’s epic rant against the doctors.

The government earlier wanted to put Metro Manila under the more relaxed general community quarantine but changed its mind and kept the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until mid-September instead. The government drew flak from many sectors for the sudden quarantine policy flip-flop while the pandemic continued to affect lives and livelihood in the country.
