Former Vice President Jejomar Binay is aiming for a return to public office in the 2022 elections.
Binay, 78, filed his certificate of candidacy for senator at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday, October 7, 2021.
When his six-year vice presidency ended in 2016, he ran for president but lost to then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in the elections.
“Bago pumunta sa COMELEC filing, dumadaan muna ako sa simbahan para magdasal. Pagkatapos po nito, diretso na po sa CCP Complex para sa filing of candidacy,” Binay tweeted.
The former veep remained active on social media, giving updates on his COC filing on Twitter. Recently, he issued statements critical of the Duterte administration’s poor handling of the pandemic.
In a statement, Binay promised to address urgent concerns during the pandemic, saying the people have been neglected by the government. He said job generation and improvement of health care system will be among his priorities if elected senator.
“Yan ang dapat ayusin natin. Dapat ang unang priority ay tulungan ang apat na milyon na kababayan natin na nawalan ng trabaho, ang mahigit tatlong milyong pamilya na nagugutom, at ang libo-libong maliliit na negosyo na nagsara,” he said.
“Sa pangmatagalan, dapat magtulungan upang maibangon ang ating ekonomiya na ang prayoridad ay lumikha ng mga trabaho. Dapat ireporma ang ating health care system. At ang kaligtasan, kapakanan, at ikabubuti ng taumbayan ang syang dapat pangunahing binibigyan ng atensyon,” he said.
The former Makati City mayor offered his long experience in public service in seeking the vote of Filipinos during the Senate race.
“Mahigit 30 taon ang karanasan ko sa public service. Yan ang inihaharap ko sa bayan. May mga nagawa tayo para ating mga kababayan. At marami pa tayong pwedeng gawin, at dapat gawin,” he said.
