Hoy, gising! Lacson prods gov’t to address possible fare hikes

Urgent action is needed from the government – particularly the Department of Energy and Department of Transportation – over the possible fare hikes due to recent increases in prices of fuel, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Tuesday.

Lacson said ordinary Filipinos cannot take much more as the COVID-19 pandemic has already taken a toll on their health and economic wellbeing.

“This calls for some urgency on the part of government,” Lacson said in a statement.

“While we have yet to hear from them, particularly the Department of Energy and Department of Transportation, the effect of the seemingly unabated increase in the prices of oil products could easily negatively impact the lives of many Filipinos already suffering from joblessness and hunger due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

Even worse, Lacson said recent studies show the Philippines is one of the laggards in terms of recovering from the effects of the pandemic.

While other countries have started reopening their economies, the Philippines has yet to see the light at the end of the tunnel, he said.

“Isa ang Pilipinas sa nangungulelat sa pag-recover sa pandemic kumpara sa mga karating bansa natin sa Asya. Nagsisipagbukas na ang ekonomiya ng maraming bansa samantalang tayo, wala pang naaaninag na liwanag,” Lacson lamented.
