As the adage goes, there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, only permanent interests.
Former Vice President Jejomar Binay and former senator Antonio Trillanes IV have banded together for the 2022 elections as part of Vice President Leni Robredo’s senatorial slate.
Their alliance happened seven years after a subcommittee of the Senate blue ribbon panel launched an investigation into the corruption allegations against Binay, who was then touted as a frontrunner in the 2016 presidential race.
Trillanes, a senator under the Aquino administration, was one of the key politikos who accused Binay of, among others, alleged overpricing of infrastructure projects in Makati when he was mayor, receiving kickbacks from contractors and having unexplained wealth.
The Senate hearings on Binay stretched from August 20, 2014 to January 26, 2016.
Binay’s presence is seen as a deterrent to the possible return of forces associated with former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
The former Vice President and Roxas have been at odds since the Aquino administration, with reports of feuding among their allies in the so called Balay and Samar factions.
The Balay faction associated with Roxas is reportedly allied with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who’s running for president.
The other politikos joining Robredo’s senatorial slate are: Senators Risa Hontiveros and Leila de Lima, abogado Alex Lacson and former Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat.
Senators Richard Gordon, Juan Miguel Zubiri and Joel Villanueva, as well as Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero, are also part of Robredo’s ticket as guest candidates.
The composition of Robredo’s senatorial lineup appears to be an upfront to the Vice President’s allies, who have repeatedly branded her as the true opposition leader.
Gordon, Zubiri and Villanueva have been accused as enablers of the Duterte administration for their support for many of the President’s policies in the early years of his term.
