The government will continue to assert its sovereign rights over the disputed territories in the South China Sea, Malacañang said Thursday.
Acting presidential spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles issued the statement after receiving reports from the Western Command in Palawan regarding the November 16 incident in Ayungin Shoal, which is within the country’s 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone.
“As we have in the past, we will continue to assert our sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over our territory,” said Nograles.
Three Chinese Coast Guard vessels reportedly blocked and sprayed water cannons on two Philippine supply boats transporting food supplies to military personnel in the Second Thomas Shoal.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. earlier condemned the incident, calling the acts of the Chinese Coast Guard as “illegal.”
