Palace hails SWS survey showing decline in self-rated poverty

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang on Sunday welcomed results of the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey that showed the decrease of Filipino families considering themselves as poor.

According to the September 2021 SWS survey, 45 percent (11.4 million) of Filipino families rated themselves as poor, a 3 percentage points less than in June 2021.

The increasing vaccination rates and the declining Covid-19 infections “put us in a position to safely expand economic activities that will positively impact employment and reduce poverty,” acting presidential spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said in a statement.

Citing the administration’s economic team, Nograles said the downgrade of Metro Manila, the center of trade and business in the country, to a more relaxed Alert Level 2 quarantine classification, with safety and health protocols in place, will boost the economy by P3.6-B and employment by 16,000 per week.

“We thank those in government, the private sector, and our people for doing their part to revitalize our economy so that we can resume the positive strides we were making in reducing poverty prior to the pandemic,” the Palace official said.
