President Rodrigo Duterte’s spiritual adviser, pastor Apollo Quiboloy, could face criminal charges in the Philippines based on pieces of evidence that may be submitted to the government by the United States, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Tuesday (November 30).
No extradition request yet: DOJ needs evidence from US to prosecute Quiboloy in PH
In a message to reporters, Guevarra said the Department of Justice could investigate Quiboloy if there’s evidence that he committed offenses apart from the sex trafficking charges he is facing in the US.
“The crime may have been exclusively committed in the requesting state only, but the evidence to be submitted to the requested state should be in such amount that if the offense was hypothetically committed in the requested state, the evidence would also be sufficient to indict,” Guevarra said.
The Justice Secretary, however, said the DOJ has yet to receive a request from the US for Quiboloy’s extradition.
Quiboloy, the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church, has been indicted in the US for allegedly trafficking victims—some as young as 12 years old—for sex. The victims were also supposedly forced to solicit funds for the religious sect.

Under Philippine laws, anyone convicted of human trafficking would be slapped with a fine ranging from P500,000 to P1 million, and jail time of at least 15 years.
