A Japanese fugitive evading deportation for several years was finally arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) while hiding at the ceiling of his house in Makati.
The warrant for deportation was served on Hiratsuka Masakazu, 63, despite efforts of a former NBI agent, Nelson Benitez, to block operatives from entering the Japanese national’s house in Makati Monday (December 6).
“He insisted that Masakazu was no longer in the country and had gone home to Japan, thus giving the subject time to hide in the ceiling,” the NBI report read.
Benitez, however, did not resist when NBI agents showed proof that he was no longer connected with the bureau.
It was learned that Benitez had been thwarting the NBI’s efforts to serve the deportation warrant for Masakazu so he could be sent back to Japan.
Masakazu is now detained at a facility managed by the Bureau of Immigration. Benitez was also arrested and charged with usurpation of authority and obstruction of justice.
