Kaway kaway na lang! Angara wants handshakes discouraged

Senator Sonny Angara has filed a resolution to discourage handshakes due to its role in spreading the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In Proposed Senate Resolution No. 374 filed Monday (April 27), Angara said COVID-19 could be transmitted by an infected person to a healthy individual when they shake each other’s hands, as stated by the World Health Organization.

The senator, who had contracted COVID-19, said a study by the American Journal of Infection Control showed that handshakes transferred the most E. Coli bacteria compared to fist bumps and high fives.

“Citizens are urged not to use the handshake as a form of greeting to protect oneself and also other people. Even during the flu season every cold months of the year, it is recommended to skip handshakes to prevent infecting others,” Angara said.

Aside from close contact with an infected person, an individual could contract COVID-19 by touching contaminated surfaces.
