Barking up the wrong tree! Duterte ‘nothing to do with’ ABS-CBN shutdown – Panelo

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has no hand in the shutdown of media giant ABS-CBN, his chief legal counsel said Wednesday.

Yesterday, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) directed the media company to stop operating its TV and radio broadcasting stations after its congressional franchise lapsed May 4.

“With respect to the closure, the President has nothing to do with the decision of the NTC,” Duterte’s lawyer Salvador Panelo told news channel ANC.

Panelo pinned on Congress the blame for ABS-CBN’s failure to get a fresh 25-year franchise.

“We must remember that it is Congress that has the authority to grant or to renew the franchise of ABS-CBN. I’ve been saying all along that you are barking up the wrong tree because it is not the President,” he said.

“There is a law that will have to be followed and Congress has not done anything about it that has been pending in that body for six years.”
