Can’t stay bored in the house: Salceda: COVID-19 cases in PH to jump by 2,600 due to ABS-CBN shutdown

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines could jump by 2,600 as a result of ABS-CBN’s shutdown, House Ways and Means chairman Albay Rep. Joey Salceda said.

In a briefer sent to reporters, Salceda said social interactions are bound to increase by 1.2 per person weekly after ABS-CBN went off the air since people can no longer watch the network’s shows. Based on relevant data, the lawmaker estimates that 15.1 million Filipinos rely on ABS-CBN as their primary source of entertainment and information.

Salceda believes people will go out of their homes since they can’t watch ABS-CBN shows. This in turn, could lead to 18.3 million more new social interactions.

Health experts have established close contact with an infected person as one of the primary modes of transmitting the virus which causes COVID-19.

ABS-CBN and its radio stations went off the air Tuesday (May 5) after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered the network to cease operations since it failed to get a new franchise from Congress.
