Malacañang on Friday defended the government’s move to relax further the quarantine measures in Metro Manila even the country recorded its highest number of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in a single day at 539 yesterday.
In an interview on GMA’s Unang Hirit, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Friday explained that the latest easing of lockdown will help revive the Covid-19-battered economy.
“Alam niyo kasi binalanse rin natin to doon sa karapatan ng ating mga mamamayan na magkaroon ng kabuhayan,” said Roque.
On Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases to place the National Capital Region under General Community Quarantine starting June 1.
“Ang katotohanan, hindi naman po pupuwede mabigyan ng ayuda ng gobyerno ang halos lahat ng hindi nakakapagtrabaho ng lalo pang mas mahabang panahon,” the Palace official said.
He was referring to the government’s Social Amelioration Program that grants poor and low-income households monthly cash assistance of P5,000 to P8,000 for two months.
Under GCQ, public transport will be allowed to operate at a maximum of 50 percent operational capacity.
