Hanggang 2021! Duterte extends life of task force for Boracay rehab

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed an executive order (EO), extending the term of the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force.

Under EO No. 115, the task force shall be dissolved on May 8 2021, unless extended or sooner terminated by the President, “to complete critical projects in Boracay island.”

The group was supposed to be dissolved last May 8, 2020.

“Upon further validation made by the Task Force last March 31, 2020, 33 percent of establishments in the Boracay island are not yet complaint with the 25-meter plus 5-meter beach easement, and 27 percent of establishments have not complied with the road easement, required under existing laws,” Duterte’s latest directive said.

The President lamented that despite the demolition of 111 structures of wetlands, 227 structures on the beach easement, and 896 on the road easement since the inception of the Task Force in 2018, there are still 723 structures built on forestland blocks, 112 on the beach easement, and 334 on the road easement.

The Task Force is also tasked to publish a final report on its accomplishments aligned with the key thematic areas of the Boracay Action Plan, including plans and programs implemented and the total budget utilized “within 30 days prior to its dissolution.”

In 2018, Duterte ordered the closure of Boracay for six months due to environmental concerns.
