IATF suspends international flights until May 8

By Prince Golez

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has approved the suspension of international flights to and from the Philippines until May 8.

“Kahapon, inaprubahan ng IATF ang… pagtigil ng inbound flights hanggang May 8, 2020, 11:59 p.m.,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser Tuesday.

Roque, however, said that restrictions do not apply to official and emergency flights; cargo ambulance and medical supply; weather mitigation; maintenance flights; and international flights for stranded foreign nationals.

Earlier, National Task Force Against Covid-19 Chief Implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. asked the Department of Transportation to temporarily suspend all inbound international passenger and commercial flights to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus disease.

“The moratorium on flights is being imposed in view of the need to ramp up the capacity of our current systems to properly process the growing number of Filipino repatriates coming back to the Philippines on a daily basis,” said Galvez.

Last Sunday, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines suspended the international operations of nine airports in the Philippines for a week that began May 3.

The nine airports are the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Davao International Airport, Clark International Airport, Iloilo International Airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, Zamboanga International Airport, Kalibo International Airport, Laoag International Airport, and Puerto Princesa International Airport.
