Inuupuan lang ni Alan! Tito Sotto vows Senate’s swift approval of ABS-CBN franchise

ABS-CBN can expect its franchise renewal bid to be smooth sailing once it reaches the Senate.

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III on Tuesday (May 5) vowed to approve immediately bills that will grant the network a new, 25-year franchise after the House of Representatives passes the counterpart measures.

Franchise bills need to be approved first before the Senate can act on them.

“ABS Franchise, bring it to the Senate, we will approve it!” Sotto said.

Sotto tweeted the statement hours after ABS-CBN went off the air in compliance with the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) order for the network to cease its operations.

NTC issued a cease and desist order against ABS-CBN due to the network’s failure to get a new franchise before its franchise expired on May 4.

The House legislative franchises committee has yet to schedule a hearing on the bills for ABS-CBN’s franchise. Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano also remains mum despite the flak that the chamber is getting for sitting on the network’s franchise bid.
