Public utility jeepneys (PUJs) are still not allowed to operate tomorrow, June 1 when Metro Manila slips down to general community quarantine, Malacañang said.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that social distancing is difficult to enforce in jeepneys.
“Ang mga jeepney po kasi harapan, so napakahirap na magkaroon ng social distancing,” said Roque as he apologized to jeep drivers whose livelihood has been affected by ongoing coronavirus lockdown.
The secretary, however, assured that the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases would “thoroughly” study how PUJs could return to the road.
Citing the Department of Transportation guidelines, Roque said that only train and bus augmentation; taxis and transport network vehicle services; shuttle services (point-to-point buses); bicycles; tricycles (with clearance from local government units) will be allowed to operate from June 1 to 21.
Provincial buses are still barred from entering Metro Manila during the period.
