President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he wanted policemen to use batons made of rubber against criminals resisting arrest.
“When a person resists arrest and he becomes violent, the first impulse of a police without a baton is to hold his gun. He might not draw it but he holds his gun, ready for action,” Duterte said in his weekly televised address.
“Eh kung may baton ito, eh rubberized man ‘yung baton noon, eh kung mahampas mo lang ang kamay, mahampas mo ‘yung katawan, eh masakit ‘yon, maybe you can subdue the person resisting arrest or the criminal,” according to him.
The Chief Executive said the government would “look for the money next year” to purchase rubber batons for the police force.
“Kung ibabalik ko ‘yung baton… balik ko siguro pero ‘yung hard rubber. Huwag ‘yung kahoy kasi ano. Pero in the meantime the rattan will do, will also suffice. We’ll look for the money next year. I’ll buy you the baton. Gamitin ‘yung baton, huwag ‘yung baril,” said Duterte.
Philippine National Police chief Debold Sinas earlier ordered policemen acting as “social distancing patrol” to use rattan sticks or “yantok” to enforce physical distancing and punish quarantine violators.
