Coronavirus quarantine measures remain in force despite the expiration of Republic Act 11469, or the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, Malacañang said.
Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon earlier said law enforcers can no longer arrest quarantine violators since the law has expired last June 25.
“Although the law has lapsed, it is not accurate to state that the government can no longer enforce curfews or any prohibitions on mass gatherings. As we previously articulated, local ordinances that remain in effect may still be enforced,” according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Roque said while the Bayanihan law may have lapsed, this will not prevent the Duterte government from addressing the health threat of coronavirus disease.
“The President continues to exercise all and every means at his disposal to protect public safety and the lives of our citizenry in the state of public health emergency and the state of calamity which unquestionably exist to this day,” he added.
As of June 27, there are 34,803 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Philippines. A total of 9,430 have recovered while 1,236 succumbed to the virus.
