‘Di kakalat virus! Recto: Old jeeps ‘good to go’ back on roads

Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto believes traditional jeepneys should be allowed to operate again so commuters will have more transportation options.

In a statement Thursday (September 17), Recto appealed to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to “allow our classic jeepneys their last patrol.”

“With their open windows and a layout which guarantees free flow of air, they are, from a health point of view, one of the safest forms of public transportation,” he said.

Recto urged DOTr to prioritize jeeps for the service contracting scheme, which was allotted a P5.58-billion budget under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

“Transportation joins test, track and treat as our tools in fighting the pandemic. But workers should only be allowed to get back to work if it is guaranteed that COVID will not be hitching a ride. Hanapbuhay, hindi hanap sakit,” he said.

Recto said it was a “pity” that only a reported one-third of jeepneys in Metro Manila have been allowed back on the road.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said it is still conducting route rationalization studies before finalizing how many traditional jeeps can be allowed to operate.
