Cebu City is the new epicenter of COVID-19 in the Philippines, with the Visayan hub recording more cases in a day compared to Metro Manila in terms of area and population.
Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, vice-chairperson of the national task force on COVID-19 response, said Monday (June 29) that Cebu City has a higher rate of infection than Metro Manila.
Cebu City recorded 131 new cases as of Sunday (June 28) compared to Metro Manila’s 356 new cases, which came from 17 cities.
“Somehow we’re able to contain in the whole country but of course in the National Capital Region and Cebu we have to do more. Particularly Cebu, it’s the epicenter now compared to Metro Manila in area and population,” Año told ANC.
He said the national government is “worried” about the new COVID-19 cases recorded in Cebu and the death toll, which stood at 78 as of Sunday.
Año said the government is eyeing Talisay District Hospital as Cebu City’s designated COVID-19 center.
He said the Department of Health has also sent an additional 32 medical workers in Cebu City to help in containing the pandemic. The military and police, meanwhile, are in the area to ensure residents strictly observe the lockdown.
