Duterte report: DepEd to provide internet access to 7,000 public schools

By Prince Golez

The Department of Education (DepEd) has set aside P700 million for the procurement of internet service to 7,000 schools as the country shifts to distance learning amid the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic

In his 14th weekly report to Congress, Duterte said DepEd is “procuring internet connection for 7,000 schools to increase the total number of public schools with internet access.”

The project will be completed in 10 months, the 18-page report added.

Duterte likewise reported that the education department issued a memorandum allowing teachers to bring home DepEd-bought devices for use in distance learning.

Classes for school year 2020-2021 will officially start on August 24. Face-to-face or in-person classes would not be held until there’s a vaccine against Covid-19.
