Feel na feel pagka-VIP! Rappler stage manages media coverage for Ressa’s cyber libel case verdict

Rappler has laid out plans on how reporters are supposed to cover the promulgation of the verdict in the cyber libel case against its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Maria Ressa.

According to guidelines sent by Rappler, reporters aren’t allowed to interview Ressa upon her arrival at the Manila City Hall, where the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46 is located.

However, reporters should Rappler editor Bea Cupin know when they’re at the venue.

“For the videographers and photographers (and everyone else really), you will be able to catch Maria when she arrives at around 8am. I’ll be there to guide you guys since we aren’t sure where she’ll be allowed to park/alight – text me if you’re there. If you’re going live for her arrival, please let me know,” she said.

Since only three reporters can go inside the court room, Cupin said other reporters will have to wait at a designated area cleared by the city hall. She said Rappler will provide reporters with all statements and materials they need.

A press conference after the verdict is handed down is possible, though the venue remains uncertain.

Cupin said reporters should get in touch with her for interview requests for Ressa after the court hands down its ruling.

“Those with requests for interviews after the presser can send me a message – we will have to do this remotely. When the presser is done, Maria and the team will leave city hall. Media can document this so long as we’re not unruly. Let’s practice physical distancing and avoid the usual gitgitan,” she said.

Ressa and Rappler are accused of maligning businessman Wilfredo Keng over a May 2012 article alleging he allowed then-Chief Justice Renato Corona to use his sports utility vehicle. The article also linked Keng to drug smuggling and human trafficking.
