Moving to pass the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 is not meant to enable the Duterte administration but to protect Filipinos from the threat of terrorism.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson stressed this on Saturday amid accusations from opponents of the measure that it was meant to allow the government to after dissenters.
He added the protection of people from terrorism was also his main consideration when he voted in favor of the 2007 Human Security Act even if he had reservations it might be misused under the administration of then President Gloria Arroyo.
“The Anti-terrorism bill has nothing to do with this president. It is all about the security and protection of our country and people. I had expressed very serious reservations in passing the Human Security Act of 2007 because of ex-Pres Arroyo. I voted YES nevertheless,” Lacson said in a post on his Twitter account.
Lacson sponsored the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 in the Senate. The House of Representatives adopted the Senate version after President Rodrigo Duterte certified the measure as urgent.
In recent media interviews, Lacson noted a massive disinformation campaign against the measure, but expressed confidence the truth will eventually prevail.
