Priority tayo pag may vaccine: Duterte, Xi talk on phone about COVID cooperation

President Rodrigo Duterte spoke on telephone with Chinese President Xi Jinping Thursday night and discussed efforts on the growing threat of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19)

Duterte mentioned to Xi the need for cooperation in research trials for Covid-19 vaccine and treatments and underscored the importance of making such widely available.

For his part, the Chinese leader committed to making any vaccine a global public good, adding that the Philippines, as a friendly neighbor, would be prioritized.

He likewise thanked his Filipino counterpart for the country’s donation to Wuhan City, where the global coronavirus pandemic began.

“Both leaders discussed progress in their respective Governments’ fight against Covid-19 and crucial strategies to restart economies under the new normal,” the Office of the President said in a statement.

Duterte and Xi also took the occasion to review the bilateral relations between the Philippines and China, emphasizing their friendship and enhanced cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

The phone call lasted 38 minutes.
