Kinampihan ng komunista! CPP slams Ressa’s cyber libel conviction

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) has set aside its anti-American sentiment to denounce the conviction for cyber libel of Rappler’s Filipino American chief executive officer, Maria Angelita Ressa.

In a June 15 statement, CPP said the guilty verdict for Ressa and former Rappler researcher Reynaldo Santos Jr. “is a brazen attack” on press freedom and a way for the Duterte administration to intimidate the media.

“By ordering Ressa’s conviction, Duterte ultimately intends to muffle the voices of journalists who dare criticize and expose his regime’s corruption, ineptness and fascist repression and make them bow to his tyranny,” the communist group said.

CPP said it has been against the legislation of a cyber libel law. The conviction of Ressa and Santos, it added, is a reason why the law should be repealed.

A Manila court found Ressa and Santos guilty of cyber libel over a 2012 article accusing businessman Wilfredo Keng of involvement in human trafficking and drug smuggling.

Ressa and Santos were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from six months and one day up to six years, though they were both allowed to post bail.
