Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin Jr. found nothing wrong with the solo protest action initiated by Lorenzo Eduardo “Enzo” Manzano in the United States.
Manzano, a Filipino citizen, may exercise free speech anywhere he is, according to the country’s top diplomat.
The son of actor-politiko Edu Manzano recently protested against the Duterte government’s alleged silencing of dissent in New York City. Enzo staged a three-hour protest action outside the United Nations
headquarters, followed by another solo protest at the nearby Philippine consulate in NYC.
“He is a Filipino. He has every right to speak his mind. And every right to speak it wherever he is,” Locsin tweeted after a netizen claimed he was an American protesting the country’s situation while
conveniently living in the US.
Locsin also defended Enzo’s integrity from criticisms, saying he is “too young to be dirty.”
“His fingers are clean. He is too young to be dirty,” he said.
Enzo posted photos of his solo protest activities on his Facebook page, saying he decided to take action because he “angry” with the news about the Philippine government.
He denounced the government allegedly kept “coming up with ways to silence us back home.”
“Sucks to hear that my fellow Filipinos can’t protest back home.. I hope my lone protest can make up for that. At least a little bit!” he said.
“There are multiple efforts to silence and scare you, but I hope we can make my protests loud enough for the world to see and hear!” he added.
