Over 15,000 contact tracers trained to help stop COVID spread – Duterte

By Prince Golez

As of June 4, a total of 15,386 people have been trained to track down anyone who might have been infected by a person with coronavirus disease (Covid-19), President Rodrigo Duterte said.

To boost its response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government aims to hire 136,000 people as contact tracers.

“To increase the existing pool of contact tracers in our country, the DOH (Department of Health) conducts batches of training of trainers on contract tracing and ensures that all RESUs (Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Units) have at least one trained trainer on contact tracing,” the President said.

In his 11th weekly report to Congress, Duterte said the DOH has also deployed 135 health workers trained to collect and encode case date to 61 hospitals and has retained the “off-site” technical point persons for all RESUs and National Capital Region City Epidemiology and Surveillance Units.

Malacañang earlier said the government is eyeing to hire public utility jeepney drivers as contact tracers.

Hundreds of thousands of jeepney drivers have lost their livelihood for nearly three months due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
