Pakonswelo! Government may tap jeepney drivers as Covid-19 contact tracers

By Prince Golez

Jeepney drivers, who were suddenly left jobless amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, could be tapped to do contact tracing, Malacañang said Wednesday.

“We are actually considering alternative livelihoods for them. There is a suggestion that they be employed as contact tracers because we do need about 120,000 of them and it’s only about 30,000 employed so far,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview with ANC.

Roque said the deployment of traditional face-to-face jeepneys in Metro Manila is “out of the question” for now.

Only train and bus augmentation units, taxis, ride-hailing cars, point-to-point buses, shuttle services and bicycles are allowed to operate in areas under general community quarantine.

“It’s not in the immediate horizon because it’s almost a physical impossibility to have social distancing when passengers face each other in a jeepney,” the secretary also said.

“However, there are new modern jeepneys being deployed where the seating arrangement is similar to buses. I understand these kinds of modern jeepneys might be deployed sooner than later,” he added.
