On Tuesday, Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. announced that President Rodrigo Duterte has instructed the DFA to inform the U.S. Embassy in Manila of his decision to suspend the VFA termination “in light of political and other developments in the region.”
In an interview with ANC Wednesday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said: “I will defer to Secretary of the Foreign Affairs. I will be meeting with the President tomorrow and that’s one of the issues I will bring up with him.”
Roque shared that he learned about the suspension two weeks ago but “it did not come from the mouth of the President himself.”
It can be recalled that Duterte threatened to scrap the VFA in January 2020 after the US canceled the tourist visa of his political ally Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.
The demand by American senators for the release of Senator Leila De Lima, who was detained on drug charges since 2017, was another reason for the Duterte administration’s decision to end the two-decade-long treaty with the U.S.
