Palace respects court’s guilty verdict on Maria Ressa cyber libel case

By Prince Golez

Malacañang said it respects the decision of a Manila court convicting Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and former researcher-writer Reynaldo Santos of cyber libel.

In a virtual presser Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque clarified that President Rodrigo Duterte had nothing to do with the online libel case.

“Naniniwaa po siya sa malayang pag-iisip at pananalita. Ang panindigan niya ang taong gobyerno hindi dapat onion-skinned at hinaharap ang pula ng taumbayan lalo na kung ito’y nanggagaling sa ating media,” said Roque.

The Palace official also stressed that Duterte has not filed any libel case against any journalist.

On Monday, Ressa and Santos were found guilty of cyber libel over a 2012 article accusing a businessman Wilfredo Keng of involvement in human trafficking and drug smuggling.
