Pangilinan hits ‘political atmosphere of repression and authoritarianism’ under Duterte regime

By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN

Opposition Senator Francis Pangilinan has scored the guilty verdict rendered to Rappler founder and CEO Maria Ressa following the 2012 cyber libel case filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng.

Pangilinan described the verdict as part of the government’s intensified campaign to silence its critics.

“The silencing of critics and the attacks on the media has been going on for three years now,” said Pangilinan.

Ressa and former Rappler reporter Reynaldo Santos were found guilty of cyberlibel and were sentenced up to six imprisonment and a total fine of P400,000.

Pangilinan said “it would have been a surprise if Maria and Reynaldo were acquitted” considering the current political atmosphere of repression and authoritarianism under the Duterte regime.

“Unless we stand up, speak out, and vigorously oppose the tyranny in our midst, their conviction will not be the last,” said Pangilinan.
