Pass your papers! Win Gatchalian wants August class opening pushed back if DepEd ain’t ready by mid-July

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian will recommend the postponement of class opening on August 24 if the Department of Education (DepEd) fails to reach 80 percent preparedness by mid-July.

Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate basic education committee, expressed concern over the state of DepEd’s preparedness for class opening following its admission that only 40 percent of public school teachers are trained for computer-based learning and using self-learning modules.

“If ever, by July 15, makikita natin na talagang kulang pa rin yung trainings, mga gamit, then we will recommend to move school opening after August 24,” he said Friday (June 26).

While Gatchalian acknowledged that DepEd is pressed for time, it also needs to rush preparations for class openings because procuring materials needed for blended and online learning will take a while.

“Time is of the essence, masikip talaga na masikip, that’s why I’m giving until July 15 para makita kung ano yung mga next steps,” he said.

Gatchalian said he is waiting for President Rodrigo Duterte to sign the law authorizing him to move the date of class opening beyond August.
