Duterte signs law on higher penalties for perjury

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law Republic Act No. (RA) 11593, a measure increasing higher penalties for perjury.

Under RA 11593, perjury will now be punishable with a minimum of six years and one day to eight years in prison and a maximum of eight years and one day to 10 years.

The previous penalty for the crime was imprisonment of four months and a day to six months or six months and a day to two years and four months.

Any public officer or employee guilty of the crime will be fine not more than P1 million and will be disqualified from holding any appointive or elective position in the government, the new law stated.

Those who willfully and knowingly offer in evidence a false witness or testimony in any judicial or official proceeding shall also be punished as guilty of false testimony.

This measure is a consolidation of Senate Bill No. 1354 and House Bill No. 8268, which the Senate and the House of Representatives passed on August 23, 2021 and August 31, 2021, respectively.

Duterte signed RA 11593 on October 24, 2021.
