San Juan Mayor Zamora defends Baguio trip: My cancer-stricken wife needed to take a rest

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora has apologized over his controversial trip to Baguio City that broke certain quarantine rules.

Zamora said he had no intention of breaking Baguio city government’s quarantine measures when he accompanied his cancer-stricken wife to the city for rest and treatment.

The mayor and his entourage reportedly skipped the quarantine checkpoint upon entering Baguio City and went directly to Baguio Country Club. The management of the posh country club reportedly informed the city about the protocol breach.

“I humbly and most respectfully apologize to Mayor Benjamin Tagalong and the people of Baguio City for this incident. There was never any intention not to follow Baguio’s health and security protocols,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter Sunday.

Zamora however defended his latest Baguio trip, saying they went to the city after his wife’s doctor advised her to take a much needed rest. His wife has stage 3 breast cancer.

“We decided to go to Baguio because her family has an old house there. She was going to stay there for a few weeks to rest and recover,” he said.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has confirmed the quarantine breach committed by Zamora and his group. Five policemen involved in Zamora’s party that violated Baguio’s protocols have reportedly been relieved from their posts.
